IKO, the Javanese sculpter
The author of the book "From BEDAJA to MADONNA", Arthur Crucq will give a talk on Friday, May 30, about the Javanese scuplter IKO.
This is the first time a book about Iko's entire work has appeared. It goes without saying that on this afternoon the author will sspeak about the specific collection of Schmutzer in the Mission Museum, especially with regard to collaboration between Jos Schmutzer and the Javanese sculpter Iko. The pictures were made by Iko at the request of Schmutzer between 1924 and 1927, according to drafts made by Schmutzer. They were meant for the Catholic mission in Ganjuran (Indonesia). The collection brings up the question in how far this concerns shared cultural heritage. Arthur Crucq will also speak about the pictures in the Museum within the context of other Iko pictures in different museum and private collections. Iko carved his picutres mainly of dijati wood. For Ganjuran stone versions were made later, as the Sacred Heart monument there still proves. There is in any case still a stone Sacred Heart statue. That sculpture was given in 1929 to the Pope, a gift from Schmutzer, together with two stone angels and an altar. They are still in the Vatican museum.
Arthur Crucq is a university lecturer of the history of art at Leiden University. He has already written a text on geometrical, decorative patterns and for some years examined art and inherirance in the early Dutch Indies.
