In this work, Dicky Takndare & Albertho Wanma explore the museum through the spiritual traditions of Papua. They introduce a korwar (an ancestral image) in which, according to local practice, the rur (the spirit of the deceased) is incorporated through a ceremony. The artists thus give a new meaning to a collection of modeled skulls from Papua by giving their spirits a new body.
Takndare and Wanma encourage us to reflect on how museums present objects and their stories: uprooted, isolated and often exoticised. Where is the Rur? asks us to pause and consider the silent presence of these objects and the spiritual resistance that their history carries.
