Pavel van Houten

Pavel van Houten

Pavèl van Houten (born in Bergen op Zoom in 1984) is a visual artist and educator with an investigative and conceptual approach. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Sandberg Institute and teaches at various art academies. In his work, he explores the way in which communities, organisations and individuals map their environment and how they introduce structure and hierarchy into it. In doing so, he uses instruments, methods and rituals derived from religious and scientific traditions. In his view, the numerical goes hand in hand with the mystical; counting can be a form of caressing. His projects, such as the “Waardeloze Winkel” (Worthless Shop), “Data Tours” and “Bureau Kleine Reizen” (Small Travel Agency), combine artistic research with participation and education. Van Houten's art invites reflection and offers a playful, critical view of everyday life. His work has been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Valkhof Museum, the Bijbels Museum and Museum W, among others.
