From 13 September 2025, the collection of the Missiemuseum in Steyl will be in radical resistance. For the first time in a century, the museum's impressive historical display will be breached. Artists from home and abroad intervene, together with guest curator Oscar Ekkelboom. Not to rearrange, but to disrupt, reject and expose forgotten connections. The artists have been invited to collaborate in this exhibition, based on their affinity with the Missiemuseum's collection and presentation.
The interventions are the result of a year of in-depth artistic research into the collection (-presentation) and its intertwined history with mission work, colonialism and scientific collecting frenzy. What does it mean to preserve objects from around the world, in these showcases? What voices are missing? What happens when we don't just look, but also listen? They disrupt, shift and allow fluid connections to emerge between objects, places and people thus far separated by the logic of possession and scientific categories.
The exhibition makes the museum's living history palpable. A must-see for anyone who wonders how we can deal with heritage that is questioned.
